Synopsis Sunday

Week One was crazy. I got a lot done and at the same time procrastinated immensely. I wrote just over 13,000 words on day four. But then didn't write more than 1,500 over the course of the next two days. But I'm still very happy with my word count. I just needed a break on day five and six, I suppose. It has been such a fun week. And I can't wait to see what the rest has in store for me.

My Word Count:

28,635 Words

(The purple bar is where I should be on my road to 50,000 words in November. The blue bars are what I've written.)

An excerpt from my writing:

Flash!

The sight of the hypnotizing light beckons me forward once again, but before I can run after it, I am grabbed from behind. Dellan has his hands on my shoulders, looking me in the face. I struggle to get away, but he simply tightens his grip on my arms. The pain in my shoulder throbs and I suck in a gasp of pain.

"Let me go, Dellan!" I stare at him with wild eyes.

"What are you doing?!" He yells through the rain. It is falling so hard that the sound and water would drown out any voice unless they were yelling. I struggle to get out of his grasp but his hold on me doesn't loosen.

"Let me go!" I scream again. The need to follow the flashes is tearing at me. I need him to let me go.

"Just tell me what's wrong." I stare at him and stop struggling just enough for him to loosen his grip. I take this chance and break away from him, tearing through the rain toward the garden. The light sears through the downpour and I chase after it. The rain pounds against the ground so loudly that I can't tell if Dellan is following me, but I suspect that he is, and the knowledge pushes me on faster. The ground beneath me is littered with slippery puddles and it's all I can do to keep my feet.

Flash!

The light fills the night sky. I don't understand why they aren't calling to Dellan in the same way that they are calling to me. But the thought is fleeting. I can only consider it for a moment before I have to throw open the garden gate and fly across the path. The light flashes inside of the window in the wall and without a second thought I tear it open.

I hear Dellan's voice yelling my name as I climb through the wall. It sounds miles away in the rain, but I can see him on the path just a few steps behind me. Yet I know that he won't follow me in here. My eyes focus on him for just a moment, but another flash deeper within the trees draws my attention and without a second thought I chase after it into the forest.

Guest Blogger: Rasha

The lovely Rasha from "and that's what she said" was kind enough to do our first Guest Blogger Friday during the month of November! She has such an adorable, fun blog. She's so great at coming up with ways to involve her readers in her blog, which I LOVE. I've literally loved it since the moment I found it! Be sure to go and check out her blog! It's adorable times a million!

Hello lovely readers of Simply Kate. I am Rasha from And This is What She Said. My blog is mostly about my daily life and musing, feel free to stop and check it out, I would love to have you!

So when Kate asked me to do a blog post, I quickly jumped on the idea, I love her cute blog and thought it would be fun, so here I am.

I don't know about you, but with it being already November 5th I am in the Thanksgiving spirit! I'm beyond ready to gobble down delicious food till I have to unbutton my pants cause they no longer fit... but we all know that Thanksgiving is more than just the opportunity to eat a bunch of delectable food. It's about being thankful for thing we have in our life. I am so thankful for so many things in my life and the list is very long... but for the sake of time, I will list 2 very important ones.

1. Family and Friends. We all say we would be no where without them, and it's honestly true. They give us so much love and support. It's amazing when you think about it.

2. For everything I have. Sometimes, my pride and my yearning gets the best of me, and I sometimes think to myself that I don't have all that I want... which is true I don't have all that I want. Yet, I have all that I need...and that my friends, is what matters. If you have shelter, warm clothes and food to fill your stomach you have more than most, so be thankful for those... Remember to count them as a blessing, too often we forget they truly are.

What are some of the things you are thankful for?

Giveaway Thursday!

I always love doing giveaways! It's so much fun to celebrate the love I have for my blog by giving stuff to one of my readers.

I went to the store with no idea what I was going to give away. As I was aimlessly wandering the aisles, I found a whole mess of things. So I decided to follow Oprah's lead and give away a few of my favorite things!

This prize includes:

A ribbon set. I LOVE ribbon.
A deck of cards. Good for so many games!
A pair of long, REALLY fuzzy socks.
Black and white bangles.
An adorable black notebook. I always have a notebook with me. I'm constantly jotting things down. This one is adorable and has cute green and white polka dots inside!
A pocket sudoku book. Sudoku is the bomb.
A super long beaded necklace.
And my favorite silver nail polish. It looks so cute on toes!

All you have to do to win is leave me a comment telling me three things you're thankful for. (It's the Thanksgiving season after all!)

For an extra entry you can tweet about this giveaway. Just comment telling me you did!

This giveaway will be going all month! I will announce the winner on Thanksgiving Day! (November 25th for those of you not in the US.)

Each Thursday you'll have another chance to enter, so be sure to check in!

Good luck!

Time Travel Tuesday

Each Tuesday, I will post a story and a video clip of me when I was little.

When I was in Kindergarten I developed a crush on one of the identical twins in my class.

I came home from school and told my dad that I was in love.

He asked an obvious question: "With which one?"

To which I replied: "How should I know?!"

I've loved singing since I was a little kid. And wasn't I just adorable?

October and a Question

Highlights:
  • 8th ~ I went to a really lame, but equally awesome church dance. There was no one there and that's what made it fun!
  • 10th ~ I gave the lesson in Relief Society. There was a beautiful fireside that night. I had a lot of fun. Then Jessica and I went stargazing. It was cold and we laughed a lot. Good times, good times.
  • 11th ~ Happy Birthday Jeff! We had his family party. He got loaded down with Star Wars gifts.
  • 14th ~ Happy Birthday Megan!  Another family party. This one ended a bit quicker because we got a call that my grandma wasn't doing well. I sat up with her with a few family members all night.
  • 15th ~ My wonderful grandmother passed away. I miss you grandma!
  • 17th ~ Happy birthday Kevin! I went to my friend Wes's mission homecoming. Later that night was my grandma's viewing. She looked so beautiful and peaceful.
  • 18th ~ The funeral was beautiful and touching.
  • 20th ~ I lost my job.
  • 30th ~ Trick or treating with my niece and nephew in my awesome ladybug tutu!
  • 31st ~ Happy Halloween!
Happiest moment: Singing to my grandma and watching her go. It was such a peaceful, spiritual experience.

Saddest moment: Any time I realize that it's going to be a VERY long time before I see her again.

Favorite Food: I've LOVED chili this month. It's just so tasty. Mmm! Add some buttered bread and you've got heaven in a bowl!

Overall Impression: It's been a hard month. There have been a lot of blessings, but it's been a sad one. I'm excited for November to start, just lose myself in writing. It's going to be amazing!

Just to remind you all, things in November will be a little different around Simply Kate. Because I'll be so busy writing my novel, I won't be able to post in the way we're all used to. I've come up with a little bit of a schedule for the month to make it easier for me to keep up with my blogging without pulling me away from my novel.

Mondays will be all about the questions you have for me.
Tuesdays are about my past. Funny stories and videos of me as a kid.
Thursdays will be all about giveaways! Be sure to check in and enter!
Fridays will be done by Guest Bloggers! I have some wonderful bloggers lined up! Exciting!
Sundays are dedicated to my progress in NaNoWriMo! I'll post my word count and maybe an excerpt from my writing that week!

I'm so excited to start!

And now for my first question!

A lot of you have been asking me what my book is about, so here is a short synopsis.

An obsession with tales of a castle deep within the forbidden region of the Hettana Forest presents Maerra with a strange new ability. Terrified of what this new gift might do, her father sends her away, but to no avail. In exile she cultivates her new gift: flashes of light that lead her to the people in her thoughts.

But when war strikes, Maerra is called home only to find the city filled with the enemy. Used by the opposing forces against her own people, Maerra soon realizes how dangerous and deadly her ability is. It is no longer a gift, but a curse. She must fight to save the lives of the people she loves, while making sure that she is not swept away by the power of the flashes.

Arrival

Woo hoo! I received my first 'hate comment' today! It was from an anonymous user and everything!

I have to tell you all something. I feel like I've finally arrived as a blogger. I'm legit now. I have creepy little trollers! (Err... troller. Singular.) I'm kind of stoked!

To that anonymous little muffin who said this:

I have a few things to reply. Since you were anonymous and I can't thank you in a private letter, I thought I would dedicate a post to you.

First off. I would just like to express my gratitude. Thank you for making me feel like I'm finally a blogger. I know I will be able to consider myself as a true blogger now and forever. And I have you to thank.

And second. Because you're anonymous, I have no idea if you have a blog. But if you do, you've probably noticed that I have a bunch of lovely friends that read mine. Don't be jealous. I have one tip for you.

Shortening your words and not capitalizing your sentences is lame and you are a loser!!!!

I hope that is constructive and helpful to you.

In closing, you're probably hoping that comment hurt me because you have some strange insecurity that you hide by anonymously hating on people's blogs. Did it hurt me?

"ur" is shorter than "your" so I'll say "no" because it's shorter than "yes."

Have a nice day all.

Afraid

I'm scared to try.

Multiple failures in different areas of my life have made me afraid.

I'm afraid to go to college because I might fail.

I'm afraid to get close to someone because they might go away.

I'm afraid to reach for the stars because I might come up short.

I believe that I can do it.

I know that I'm talented and blessed with so many wonderful gifts.

I know that I have so much to offer.

But I'm scared to try.
