Down
I'm feeling down.
Down like a bird that can't fly.
Down like a fallen dish, shattered on the floor.
Down like... something that's not up. (I'm out of metaphors.)
There are a few reasons why this is...
1. I think it's finally sinking in that my Grandma is gone and that she's really not going to be there the next time I go to her house. Anytime I think about Thanksgiving, or Christmas Eve, it really hurts. She was the center of both of those holidays and traditions, and change scares me. I miss my grandma.
2. I'm unemployed again. When I started my job, I knew that it might only be temporary. I was taking the place of a 70 year old woman who had broken her arm and had a myriad of other health problems. But they wanted her back when she was better if her doctor gave her the okay. She wasn't supposed to be back until November. When I showed up for work on Wednesday, she was there. Two weeks early. She and my coworker were shocked that no one had called me. I went down to my bosses office trying not to cry.
3. I had to take down my green screen out of the spare bedroom. And I have no idea where I can put it now when I make my next book review. But that's kind of minor. I'm just a little bummed.
4. National Novel Writing Month starts in 9 days. While I think I've got a pretty good idea of what I'm doing, I'm a little bit terrified.
5. I just want someone to hold me.
Enough of me whining. Here are some happy things too.
1. It's raining and smells wonderful. The sun is shining through the clouds and the wet, colorful leaves look beautiful.
2. I'm about to play (and maybe finish) Zelda: Ocarina of Time. That's awesome!
3. I've started making my Halloween costume! It's poofy!
Things aren't so bad. I've got a good life and things to keep me busy.

Six Degrees of Katie's Brain
My head is a jumbled mess of thoughts. So many of them are unconnected, but like six degrees of Kevin Bacon, I'm sure I could figure out a way to connect them.
Thought #1: It's weird seeing people my age getting married. People YOUNGER than me getting married. I'm happy for them. Albeit a little jealous. But when it comes down to it, I'm not ready for that kind of a commitment. Maybe if I had that one amazing guy in my life, I'd be willing and capable of taking that step. But at the moment, I haven't found the one that I want to spend the rest of my life with. So, it's not that I'm jealous that they are married and moving on with their lives, starting that new chapter in their lives. I'm jealous that they have someone to love for the rest of eternity and I don't.
Thought #2: Why am I having so much trouble keeping to my diet or to my exercise plan? I want to lose this weight. So badly. I've been stuck within 3 pounds on either side of 180 for the past 4 months. It's aggravating. After losing nearly 40 pounds so quickly, being stuck at this weight that doesn't satisfy me is really bothering me. I don't think that my clothes look nice on my body, though I try my best to hide how uncomfortable I feel. (Connection to #1: I've been feeling like my appearance isn't attractive to men.)
Thought #3: I'm still unemployed. In October, I'll have been unemployed for a year. It's not that I haven't been trying to find a job. I just under qualified. I know that I need to get over my stupid pride and start at the bottom. Work at McDonald's or something. But honestly... the thought repulses me. For a few reasons, but the biggest one is that I have little to no self control when it comes to food. I've been doing pretty well trying to avoid fast food, but if I work there, I might just gain those 40 pounds right back. I can't let that happen. But I hate that I don't have any money. To buy clothes, to buy a car, to get out of my parent's house. (Connection to #2: Maybe if I had money to buy clothes better suited for my body type right now, I wouldn't feel so awkward at my weight.)
Thought #4: I've been messing around with Photoshop again after a long time. It's taken a little bit of time to get back into the swing of things, but I think I picked it up alright. I worked on my blog and I love the way it turned out. I owe Photoshop for all of that. I feel like I should get back into making videos as well. I haven't made a video since I started losing weight. Mostly because I was losing weight so quickly, I thought it wouldn't be long before I looked all smashing. I could make a video in a few months and surprise all of my viewers with how good I looked. But I don't feel like I'm at that point yet, so I haven't made a video. I've been trying to write a lot more as well, but I don't feel like it's anything special. It doesn't ignite my interest. (Connection to #3: I feel mediocre in everything I do. Why would anyone want to hire someone mediocre when they can have someone amazing?)
Thought #5: I want to read. But every time I sit down with a book, I read half a chapter and lose interest. (Connection to #4: Maybe I'm jealous that the writing is better than mine?)
Thought #6: My grandma is really sick. She has cancer and has only been given a few months to live. I think I've taken for granted how wonderful she is. I love her so much. I've been learning so much about her just by listening to my family members talk about her life. Yesterday she told a simple story about how when my grandpa proposed, he had to leave soon after. He was in the military and was stationed somewhere else. He sent her the rings in the mail and she had to put it on her own hand. I wish I had taken more time to get to know about her life. She's an amazing woman, and I have only seen a small bit of her incredible life. (Connection to #5: My grandma's life is a story that I don't know, just like all those books that I can't find the gumption to read.)
This post was kind of depressing. Forgive me for my rants. I've just got so many negative thoughts in my head right now and needed to get them out somehow. I'll try and replace them with positive ideas and get back to happy posting soon.

August: A Month in the Life of Katie
Highlights:
- 6th ~ Alyson and I drove to Cedar City to spend the weekend with our aunt Susan and cousins Julie and Cassie.
- 7th-8th ~ The five of us girls went camping. Gorgeous mountains. We got rained out early on the 8th and came home. We were all hungry, so we went to IHOP. We looked like drowned rats and smelled like campfire. It was fabulous.
(Gorgeous fog in the morning. Mmm.)
(Yay greasy camp hair!)
(The girls)
(Beautiful sister and me)
- 12th-15th ~ Kristi and Ronnie came to Vegas for an awesome weekend.
- 12th ~ We went and played Bingo and a few slots. It was my first time gambling (besides buying Lotto tickets when I was 19) and I wasn't too impressed with it. We also ate at an awesome buffet. So yummy!
- 13th ~ The three of us, plus Alyson's friends Akilah and Aaron, walked the strip. It was a lot more fun that I first thought it was going to be. The night was full of laughs. Hey. Can anyone teach me how to Dougie?
(My beautiful sisters.)
(The group walking the strip!)
- 14th ~ Alyson, Kristi and I went and saw KA! Cirque du Soleil! It was phenomenal. It blew my mind on so many levels.
(My sisters are beautiful. I love them.)
- 15th ~ We all said our goodbyes to Alyson and headed home. It was fun staying in Vegas, but I was so happy to be home again.
- 16th ~ I went to FHE where everyone seemed pretty excited to see me. We learned how to Country Swing Dance. Kill me now.
- 18th ~ Nashelle came over for a little while and we laughed about people getting married and other funny things. I miss her already.
- 19th-31st ~ I kind of disappeared into my room. I'm having trouble finding a job, and have been very depressed lately. I'm really trying to get over it. Hope I do soon.
Happiest Moment(s): There were quite a few amazing moments, but these two stand out in my mind.
- My mom rushing to hug me when we went to pick her up from my Grandma's after I got home, saying: "Is that my baby?" It was an incredible moment.
- When I first got home, no one was home. The sound of my dad calling my name and crashing down the stairs to hug me.
Those were the two happiest moments.
Saddest Moment: Finding out that my grandma has cancer and that she's not going to be with us much longer.
TV:
- Firefly ~ I finished it and Serenity (the companion movie). I liked it. But I think it was the movie that sold it for me.
- Boy Meets World ~ I got into the 5th Season and I love it just as much as I usually do. I just watched my all time favorite episode. It's pathetic how well I can quote the lines. Watch it here, here and here.
Books:
- The Hunger Games ~ Reread. Just as captivating the third time. I love this book.
- Catching Fire ~ Also a reread. The sequel to Hunger Games. I also love this one.
- Mockingjay ~ First time reading it. It was the third in the Hunger Games trilogy and it came out this month, which is why I reread the other two. I didn't like it. I'm just being honest. I didn't like it.
Favorite Food: Campbell's Vegetarian Vegetable soup. It's 90 calories of yum! It's Mmm mmm good!
Overall Impression: The first half of the month was incredible. I absolutely loved it. The second half I didn't love so much. I'm hoping it doesn't take me another two weeks to snap out of this funk.

I'm Back!
Hey all! I just want to apologize for being so blog-missing lately. I've been having a really rough time and had nothing of interest to write about and I had a feeling everything that I COULD write would be sad and depressy. *Big breath!* That was a long sentence.
But things are looking up again. This is a relatively short post, but I just wanted to link you to two of my posts that I just posted. (They are my monthly posts that I missed. I cheated and changed the date to look like I really did post them at the right time.)
Monthly Review
Goal Updates
They aren't anything to spectacular, but there they are if you want to read them. :) I have lots of exciting things going on in my life now and I'm much happier, so I plan on writing more now that I have my forgotten posts all done! See you all soon!

I guess it's gonna have to hurt...
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
I hope this is the case... because right now I feel like I just ripped out my heart and threw it into a meat grinder. It hurts. So much.
Right now I'm having a hard time picturing how things will get better. I mean... my heart looks like ground beef! How can I recover from that?
I ended a relationship with someone I really and honestly loved because I knew that's what my Heavenly Father wanted and expected of me. I know I'm doing the right thing. I know I am. But why does the right thing have to hurt this badly?
I've been replaying this song in my head all morning. I told him two hours ago... and I know it's soon, and it's hurting... but it will get better, with time. It has to.
I have a list of things I want, the things in my Patriarchal Blessing. "These blessings are predicated on your faithfulness and your desire to receive them." I have the desire. I want those blessings more than anything in this life. Now I just need to work on my faithfulness. But I took that first step, and I have to believe that if I keep moving in the right direction, things will work out for my good.

Choosing
You know when you were little and you thought that when you grew up you would simply meet the perfect guy and live happily ever after? You'd have the perfect dream house, the perfect big backyard with a swing set (Because your parents never got you one), maybe even a perfect swimming pool. You'd have the kids that were perfect, just as you imagined yourself to be. (Looks, clothes and social hierarchy didn't matter when you were five.) You'd even have the little dog that was perfectly trained just as the dogs in the movies always were. Everything would be well... perfect.
I think I held on to this naive thought for most of my life. I definitely believe that love happens, and happiness, but it's not simply going to fall into your lap. Life isn't easy. It never will be. It took me a little bit too long to figure this out.
I read my patriarchal blessing tonight. In simplified terms, it mentions that I will have a chance to attend the temple and marry a 'sweetheart of my own choosing.' I remember when I heard this for the first time at age 18; I felt elated, thrilled. Whomever I choose? Really? It's going to be that simple?
But it isn't. At one point in my life, I thought I knew who I wanted. I wanted his love more than I'd ever wanted anything in my life. I didn't get it. It hurt. A lot. But now I realize that I hadn't chosen him. Not really. I remember in my prayers during that time in my life, I prayed to know whether he was the right choice. In my heart, I knew he wasn't.
My blessing also cautioned me to 'choose carefully' for it would be the biggest, most important decision I would ever make. Dang it. It's become complicated again. I know this caution is one that I should pay attention to, and I will. I'm going to keep this thought in my prayers, and when the guy is right, I'm confident that I'll know. My heart will choose him completely.
I just wish things were easier... but I suppose that will simply make it more amazing when I find it. And the vision of the perfect house, yard, dog is probably a long shot as well. (Not the kids. I don't care what anyone else will say, my kids will be my whole world. They will be perfect. I love them so much already.) The struggles I go through now will simply make me stronger once I've 'chosen my sweetheart' so that we can make it forever and eternity. I suppose waiting and strengthening myself until that moment will seem like so small an amount of time compared to forever.

Longest. Post. Ever.
Quick run through: Trip. Depressive Episode. FHE. Girls Night. (Hey, I haven't blogged in two weeks! There's lots to cover!)
After FHE I went to my friend, Brooke's house. Some great laughs there as well. Most of which included Brooke teasing me because I had watched 'Paranormal Activity' the other night. I started it with my sister and after we decided that we should turn it off because it was too scary, I went home and searched the synopsis; curious about how it ended. Well, the synopsis was intriguing and I ended up watching the rest alone. SCARY movie. Terrifying really. And I really hate that the girl's name is "Katie."
I apologize for the length of this post. It's just been about two weeks since I posted last. I'm feeling much less depressing and missing now, and will try to post more often, therefore shortening the lengths of my posts. Much love!
P.S. My cats aren't allowed in my room. I live in the basement and mine is the only room with heating. That and it's creepy outside of my door and so I always leave it closed. I can't sleep with them in my room. They will inevitably wail at the door to get out, and if I let them in at all, they'd wail to get in. So they aren't allowed. However, they have learned that sometimes my door doesn't latch and will push it in, trying to be sneaky. They usually only pop it open enough to peek in. Not tonight. They pushed hard, opening a substantial gap. I yelled for them to "GET OUT!" and they took off pretty quickly, making it seem by the time I got over to close it that the door had opened itself. GAH! I swear, that demon in "Paranormal Activity" has moved on to get me!
This is not my first encounter. My mom asked me the morning after watching the movie if I had come into her room that night and said her name. To my recollection, I did not. My imagination ran away with me. I was possessed. I stood by her bed for hours. Apparently possessed people do that. Next, I'll be chewing my own arm off and dying of blood loss. *sigh* What a way to go.
I've been totally missing from my blog. For this I apologize. In fact... I've kind of been missing from life in general. Last week... Not a good week for me. I'll admit it.
But I'm back and I have LOTS of hilarious things to mention.
First things: West Side Story was AMAZING! My best friend Nashelle was Maria. The lead. Think 'Juliet' of the 'Romeo' persuasion. Yeah! Super big deal! I went down and spent a few days with her and saw the show twice. It was magical. Very well done! Nashelle was absolutely spectacular!
Unfortunately, somewhere during my stay I got really depressed. (This just happens. Chemical imbalance and all of that.) I drove home the following morning, and didn't emerge from my room for over a week. It was a little scary.
BUT! I promised you funny! Here are a few of my favorite moments from the trip:
(While jamming out in Nashelle's car, I shook my head around like I was in a mosh pit, making my head hurt.)
Kate: Ow! I think I gave myself 'Shaken Katie Syndrome.'
(Nashelle jamming a straw in her lip and reacting to the 'SKS' comment with wide eyes.)
Kate: Oh! That's attractive!
Nashelle: *glares at me and looks in the mirror, her eyes going wider*
(Lots of laughter ensued.)
(A friend of Nashelle's bit her arm, leaving teeth marks for hours afterward.)
Nashelle: It looks like a hickey!
Kate: That's NOT a hickey! You get a hickey when.... *pauses, feeling stupid*
Nashelle: *laughing* No, Katie, go on! How do you get a hickey?
Good times.
I finally decided to get out of my room and go to FHE. It was a combined activity with both the wards in town. Which meant: lots of boys that I don't know and more importantly, THEY don't know what a spaz I can be. Unfortunately, this was ruined when my friend Natalie freaked out, pointing to my leg. "There's a SPIDER on you!" For some reason whenever this sentence is uttered, I always look down calmly, almost slow motion. Then my heart seizes and I flick it away, squealing a little bit. We both freak out, and run to the other side of the room. There went any semblance I had at being semi-cool around these new hotties. On the up side: they have all noticed me now. On the down side: Spring is approaching, and with it, The Spider Vendetta: Part Two 'Thissa time it'sa personal!'
The lesson was about dating. A lesson about dating at a Singles activity? No. Way. What kind of cliched madness is this? *said with mass amounts of sarcasm* This means an entire night filled with lectures and awkward silences from the attendants. Surprisingly though, it was a very fun night. They had the girls and the guys write questions about dating on color coordinated paper slips. Completely anonymous of course. The question was asked and the opposite sex answered. Hilariousness ensued.
Of course, because I read Mormon Bachelor Pad, I felt the need to ask the question 'How do guys rate girls?" The answers were quite funny.
Random-guy-I-never-caught-the-name-of: Well, there's two categories. "Eh." And "DAAANG!"
The instructor: The way I see it, dating a girl is like looking to buy a car. Sure, you might want the really pretty looking one over there; but what you need to do is make sure the engine is working properly.
(My attention faded out after that.)
My thoughts: He totally just said "Make sure she's not crazy!" That's kind of offensive! Haha!
The lesson ended, and they broke out the refreshments. Natalie jumps up and literally GROWLS in a deep voice: OH MY HECK CREAMIES! It was hilarious.

Brooke took it upon herself to torment me by whispering "Kaaatieeeeee" over and over and over again throughout the night. I'm glad that Mecailla was there because she was there to help me gang up on Brooke.
Funny quote from the night:
(While Brooke talked about what she would do if she had a gun to her head.)
Brooke: I would say "Go ahead, shoot me." My confidence would shake them. "Yeah, that's right. I have the power of God on my side." *holds up her hand, pretending to hold something* "Don't make me pull out my quad!"
P.S. My cats aren't allowed in my room. I live in the basement and mine is the only room with heating. That and it's creepy outside of my door and so I always leave it closed. January: A Month in the Life of Kate
Before I unfortunately deleted my blog in December, it was tradition that at the end of each month, I would write a post about the happenings of my month. I didn't blog nearly as much as I do now, and it was my way of not feeling guilty about not posting regularly. But they served a purpose much more important than that. It was great to be able to read through a short post about my month if I had forgotten something down the road. They are the things about that old blog that I miss the most. So, I'm bringing them back.
Most Memorable Moments:
- 1st ~ Happy New Year! I spent the day filming a music video with one of my best friends. I like to direct, she likes to act (she actually got the part of Maria in West Side Story at Snow College this month! Congrats Nashelle!) so it's the perfect duo! I always love our filming days. They don't happen nearly enough.
- 3rd ~ I gave the lesson in Relief Society. It went well, and it was something that I had needed to learn. Whether anyone else got anything from it...
- 6th & 8th ~ I finished the last two books in the Chanters of Tremaris Trilogy. (Love these books!)
- 9th ~ I had a movie night with my sister, Kristi. It had been a while since I'd seen her, and it was great to just sit down and watch a movie. Coraline is awesome! (I love Neil Gaiman! I've read the book about five times and I am currently reading The Graveyard Book written by him as well.)
- 10th ~ Chuck is back! So happy! Those of you who don't watch Chuck, you are missing out.
- 11th ~ Happy YouTube anniversary! It's been two whole years!
- 16th ~ The Relief Society sisters got together for a getting to know you activity. At one point, I laughed so hard that I cried and my face contorted. It was not attractive, but it felt so good.
- 17th ~ Linger Longer! Oh dear, such fun.
- 18th ~ I went to lunch with my good friend Toni. Cafe Rio = Win! (Though Bajio is better.) Later that night, I went to my grandmother's house to eat soup and spend time with my extended family. Potato soup in bread bowl. So tasty, but was the death of my diet. Also, thank you so much for the quilt Grandma! I love it! I skipped out of dinner a little early and went to Family Home Evening for the ward. Good fun! Good fun was made great when I was asked on a date!
- 19th ~ I had a 'movie night' with one of the greatest girls I know, Brooke. Except we never got the movie and ended up chatting for five hours about boys.
- 21st ~ My date with Pete! We went to Avatar! Very much liked the movie, not so sure about the date.
- 22nd-29th ~ Life slowed down this week because I wasn't feeling great, physically or emotionally. (I was able to get in some awesome flirting time with the MBP boys, though.)
- 30th ~ My dad took me to Provo to spend time with my cousins! It was so much fun and though I was only able to see them for seven hours and I was sad to leave, it was a great day and I'm glad we did it.
- 31st ~ I slept. I slept a lot. I'm not quite sure how I did it. I went to bed around 1:30am and figured my body would wake itself up around 10; giving me plenty of time to get ready for church. I fell awake and checked the time. 2:30pm?! What?! Okay. No church today.
Happiest Moment: Arriving in Provo.
Saddest Moment: "Katie, I have some bad news." Okay, so the moment got increasingly worse as the news was spilled, but we'll say the bad news was the saddest moment. My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. B, and those that have been devastated by the whole thing.
New Movies Watched:
- Avatar - I'd been wanting to see it for a very long time. It didn't disappoint. It wasn't quite what I expected, but I really enjoyed it!
- Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging - Based on the book "Angus, Thongs and Full-frontal Snogging." I read this book when I was in Jr. High and loved it! I didn't even know they had made it into a movie, and it was hilarious!
Books Read:
- The Waterless Sea by Kate Constable - So awesome! She is such an amazing storyteller.
- The Tenth Power by Kate Constable - Also awesome!
Favorite Food: Spinach Wraps! Avocado, a little bit of fat free ranch, turkey, cheddar, baby spinach and good to go!
Overall: It was a good month. There were a lot of confusing, flustering and depressing things thrown in and a lot of the time I had a hard time focusing on the good. But after writing this post I realize that there was an abundance of good things to be found. It was a good first step into 2010, but I'm not sad that we'll be moving into February...

This crazy week of mine...
It's been quite the week. I'm trying to come up with something witty to start this post with, but nothing is coming to me. I guess I'll just get into it.
On Tuesday I had a really good friend over to watch a movie. As we were going through the movie choices, she mentioned something about boys and instantly our focus switched. We didn't end up watching a movie. Instead we talked for five hours. Mostly about boys. She's going to try and set me up with a few people, including a guy from her mission that lives in Provo. (He thinks I'm cute.) She also has a few other friends that have seen my pictures via her facebook that want her to hook them up with me. I'm game. It was very much fun, and I just needed that girl's night.
The next night was institute. We had about eight quilts to tie, and I helped with one. About the time I needed a break, Pete showed up and I went over to try and teach him how to tie a quilt. He was hopeless and I ended up just finishing off his strand of yarn and talking to him for the rest of the night. He gave me a ride home and I got online. (Because that's what I do.)
Thursday was the day of my date with Pete. I woke up very excited, and couldn't wait for it to start. Somewhere during the time when I was getting ready, I got a phone call from my sister. She had seen on the news that one of my all time favorite teachers had been arrested for sexual misconduct with a student. I don't believe it's true. I've thought about it a lot, and I honestly don't believe it's true. I went onto the news web page and sure enough, there he was along with a brief story. They had a picture of his mugshot, and I kept thinking "This isn't the man I know. He's not smiling, his eyes are dull. This is not him." I credit this man to a large amount of my growth as a person. In an incredibly difficult time in my life when the world around me was threatening to bring me down, he was one who could make me feel like I was a wonderful person. That my life was worth something and that I had so much to give. This news absolutely devastated me.
I began to read some of the comments on this story, growing more and more depressed with each harsh and negative word. I needed to make one of my own. I put a lot of thought into it, and this is what I wrote:
"This man is one of my favorite people. I don't know whether the accusations against him are true or not, but I do know one thing; he does not deserve the hatred and insults he has been receiving in these comments. Do not judge a man that you do not know because of a story that we do not know the end of. That is all I have to say in the matter."
Needless to say, my desire to go on the date was pretty much non-existent after that. But I finished getting ready and went, burying the experience deep. I wanted to enjoy this date, despite the knowledge I now had.
Pete and I went to McDonald's and then to see Avatar. (Great movie!) We sat a little too close to the screen, and my head started to hurt halfway through the three hour movie. I very much enjoyed it, though.
There were a couple times I thought about reaching over and holding Pete's hand...but I realized that I really didn't want to. When the movie was over, my head hurt, and I just wanted to go home. I didn't have patience for that awkward "What now?" scene in the truck outside of my house, so I said:
"Can I have a hug?"
I reached across the seat, hugged him and got out of the car. It might be that I was just upset but I don't think I'm feeling anything special for Pete. I must have been really distracted or unimpressed enough that I didn't even think about the fact that his awesome arms were around me.
I didn't get a hair cut today. I knew I wouldn't have a car (my parents went out of town). I didn't plan that when I had made the appointment. I'll have to make a new one. I'll post before and after pictures.
It was a very busy week, and I'm glad it's coming to a close.

Happiness
It was my turn to give a lesson in church. Whatever topic I wanted (with some inspiration of course.) But I was having trouble picking a topic.

One of my goals for 2010 was to "Strive to maintain a positive and upbeat attitude."
By the 2nd, my eyes were flooded over with tears, and my heart weighed down with sorrow.
How could I have failed in my goal already? It hadn't even been a full two days in the new year!
The thought occurred to me that there might be many other people who were feeling discouraged and I based my lesson on a talk by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf called "Happiness, Your Heritage."*
I feel very blessed by the things that I learned from preparing this lesson.
President Uchtdorf mentions that two ways to help yourself become happy are "creativity and compassion."
Creativity:
"...take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty." He says. You don't need to be artistic to be creative. Creation doesn't have to be a work of art, it doesn't need to be perfect. Creation can span from a garden, a song, or even something as simple as making someone smile. If you put forth the effort to create something you are proud of, you will find joy.
Compassion:
“Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.” J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan. It is impossible to feel sorry for yourself when you are helping someone less fortunate than yourself. Immerse yourself in the service of your fellowmen, and I guarantee that "your gloom [will be] gone, you'll feel light, the Spirit of the Lord [will be] upon you, and everything [will] seem illuminated.” Again, just the simple act of making someone smile can make your own heart so much lighter.
This lesson was just such a wonderful example in my life, and I wanted to share it with you. I believe these principles will help me in my quest to "maintain a positive and upbeat attitude." Maybe they will even help you!
*I realize that some of the people who might read this blog are not LDS (Mormon), but I thought the principles I've listed here could benefit anyone, no matter their faith.

Tis the Season to be Jolly?
There is always something about this time of year that makes me feel sad. There are multiple reasons for this:
A quote from 'Friends' comes to mind:
"Here's to a lousy Christmas, and a crappy New Year."
- Snow. I really quite dislike snow. It's wet. Cold I don't mind. I can battle the cold. But as beautiful as newly fallen snow is, if I have to go out into it, I don't find it magical. I find it moist and annoying.
- The shorter days. Not that I'm not a night owl by nature, but the lack of sunlight bothers me.
- Christmas. I know that sounds terrible. I love the holiday. I love celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. But I'll admit the hype of everything gets to me. It's fun, but it ends rather quickly leaving me disappointed when everything is over. This might be the first year that I am disappointed before Christmas has even started.
- Mistletoe. This subtle holiday decoration reminds me of the fact that I am alone for the holidays once again with no one there to kiss me underneath the little bundle of red berries and green leaves. This also makes me realize that there is no one to kiss me as the ball drops on New Years Eve. Ugh, it's pathetic but I would go for an NCMO if it meant I got kissed during one of those moments.
- Sleep. This has nothing to do with the season really. I'm just not getting enough of it. And I probably won't be for quite some time. (Except after I finish this post. I will be sleeping when it's published.)
