Cedar City

Living nine hours away from my family is hard. I lived in my parents basement, and though I was ready to get out of there, it has been so difficult to go from seeing them every day to being lucky to talk to them once a week.

The distance means that I will probably only see them a few times a year, if that. It's hard to think about sometimes.

I've always been really close with my parents. When I was a teenager, I kept expecting to hit an age where they would drive me crazy and embarrass me on an hourly basis like all of my friend's parents. That never happened. They have always been the ones that I go to when I'm having a really bad day.

But it's so much harder to go to them with my problems now that I'm in Las Vegas. Talking is good, if I can catch them; but nothing is better than a hug from them. And that's simply not available.

On Saturday I was able to hug my mom.

My aunt had surgery, and my mom is staying there to take care of her. Just a mere two and a half hours away.

So Alyson and I hopped in the car and shuffled off to Utah to give my mom a great big hug. It felt amazing.

All of my aunt's children were there as well, and while Susan slept in her bedroom, we played games at the kitchen table, which is known to happen when a bunch of family gets together. I won. Of course.

Around 8:00pm, we hugged one more time before Aly and I got back in the car and drove back to Nevada. It was a short, perfect trip. Those few hours were just enough to last me until the next time I see my parents. I hope.

I love you mom!

That is such a sweet story, and makes me pine for my own parents. I left home when I was 18 to attend college and never went back, but I was just in north Florida, not far from south Florida. Then Matt and I picked up and moved to Maryland when I was 25... and I miss them every day. It's hard.

I'm glad you got to hug your mom; that's a feeling that doesn't fade for a good long time. :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog, by the way, and I'm happy to be following you!

My mom lives in NM and we live in CA, but we talk everyday. I would love to live close to her but at least her and I are close.

I am glad you got to spend some time with your mom and family.

Best,

elena

I hate that I live so far away from my parents and the rest of my family and I just realized the other day that for a long time I will probably always live very far away from them and when my little sister has her baby I will be that crazy Skype aunt. Glad that you go to go see your mom though!

Kate, mom's are a precious commodity. I just lost mine in February after 85 years. She was the best and I will always cherish her memory. Give yours hugs whenever possible! :)

I love your blog design! I am from Utah, too.

I moved out at 18 and was not close with my mom for years (I've always been close with my dad), but having kids changes things and I couldn't imagine living far away from them.

So sweet! I hope one of my children grows up to feel this way someday. I (was removed) moved out when I was 18 too by an evil stepfather. You're very lucky to have a close relationship. Happy Thursday!

Even when I lived far away from my parents/family, I made it a point to call my mom at least every other day. I literally MADE time for it, even if it was just a 5 or 10 minute conversation. I'm glad that I live only about 35 minutes from them now, though. Sometimes I forget how difficult it was to be far away (I've lived anywhere from 300 miles to 1300 miles from my family)

I also live in different state than my parents - it's so hard! I'm glad you got to visit your family.
